What is 40MnCr5 Alloy Steel?
40MnCr5 is a medium-carbon alloy steel commonly used in engineering applications requiring good toughness, wear resistance, and strength. It is part of the EN 10083-3 standard and is often used in the manufacturing of components such as gears, shafts, and crankshafts.

What is the Chemical Composition of 40MnCr5?
Chemical Composition (Typical)
| Element | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.36 – 0.44 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.60 – 0.90 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.80 – 1.10 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.035 |
What are the Properties of 40MnCr5 Alloy Steel?
Properties of 40-MnCr5 is as follows:-
- Hardness (After Heat Treatment): Can reach up to 55 HRC (Rockwell Hardness)
- Tensile Strength: ~850-1100 MPa (after quenching and tempering)
- Yield Strength: ~600 MPa
- Good Wear Resistance due to chromium content
- Moderate Weldability (requires preheating to avoid cracking)
- Good Machinability (in softened condition)
Heat Treatment
- Normalizing: 850–880°C, then air cooling
- Hardening: 820–860°C, followed by oil or water quenching
- Tempering: 540–680°C to achieve desired mechanical properties
