DIN 1.2311 mold steel | DIN 1.2311 steel

Description

What is DIN 1.2311 Steel?

DIN 1.2312 steel is a high quality plastic mold steel material. Steel 1.2312 is material produced by add about 0.08% sulphur on material 1.2311. The S element improves free cutting ability of 1.2311 steel . 2312 material is usually delivered in pre-hardness condition and hardness 28~34HRC.

ASTM P20+S steel is equivalent to DIN 1.2312 material. Generally, 40CrMnMoS8-6/1.2312 and P20+S mold steel will have the same properties for the final application.

DIN 1.2311 Plastic Mould Steel:

1. What is the primary characteristic of DIN 1.2311 steel regarding its hardness, and how does this benefit its application?

Ans:- DIN 1.2311 steel is primarily characterized as pre-hardened plastic mould steel with uniformly distributed hardness in large cross-sections. This pre-hardened state eliminates the need for further heat treatment in many applications, simplifying manufacturing and ensuring consistent mechanical properties across the mould.

2. Name three key applications for DIN 1.2311 plastic mould steel.

Ans:- DIN 1.2311 plastic mould steel is commonly used for injection moulds, casting dies, and die holders. It is also applied in mould frames for plastic moulds, zinc die, and recipient sleeves.

3. Describe the typical chemical composition of DIN 1.2311 steel, specifically mentioning the ranges for Carbon (C) and Chromium (Cr).

Ans:- The typical chemical composition of DIN 1.2311 steel includes Carbon (C) in the range of 0.35-0.45% and Chromium (Cr) in the range of 1.80-2.10%. Other key elements are Manganese (Mn) at 1.30-1.60% and Molybdenum (Mo) at 0.15-0.35%.

4. Explain the importance of “good mirror polish ability” and “less streak texture” as properties of DIN 1.2311 steel.

Ans:- “Good mirror polish ability” allows the steel to achieve a highly reflective surface finish, which is crucial for plastic moulds to produce aesthetically pleasing products without imperfections. “Less streak texture” further contributes to ease of finishing and results in smoother mould surfaces, reducing post-processing for molded parts.

5. What are the recommended temperature ranges for soft annealing and hardening of DIN 1.2311 steel?

Ans:- For DIN 1.2311 steel, the recommended soft annealing temperature range is 710-740°C, followed by furnace cooling. The hardening temperature range is 850-880°C, typically followed by quenching in oil or a salt bath.

6. How does the tempering process affect the hardness of DIN 1.2311 steel, according to the provided data?

Ans:- The tempering process generally reduces the hardness of DIN 1.2311 steel after quenching. For example, after quenching, the hardness is around 51-52 HRC, but with increasing tempering temperatures (e.g., from 100°C to 700°C), the hardness decreases from approximately 52 HRC to 28 HRC.

7. Identify at least two equivalent international or national standards for DIN 1.2311 steel.

Ans:- Equivalent international and national standards for DIN 1.2311 steel include AISI P20 (American), 40CrMnNiMo7 (DIN), AFNOR Z210CW12-01 (AFNOR), and GB 3Cr2Mo (Chinese). These designations refer to materials with similar chemical compositions and properties.

8. What is the main difference in chemical composition between DIN 1.2311 and DIN 1.2312 steel, and what is its effect?

Ans:- The main difference in chemical composition between DIN 1.2311 and DIN 1.2312 steel is the sulfur content, with 1.2311 containing less sulfur. A higher sulfur variant like 1.2312 is offered for improved machinability, while 1.2311’s lower sulfur contributes to better polishability and less streak texture.

9. Describe the general properties of DIN 1.2311 steel that contribute to its long service life and good machinability.

Ans:- DIN 1.2311 steel’s properties that ensure a long service life and good machinability include its high hardness and strength after heat treatment, excellent wear and corrosion resistance, and high toughness. Its good cutting performance and low deformation rate during processing also contribute to efficient manufacturing and mold precision.

10. What are some of the available supply forms and surface finishes for DIN 1.2311 steel?

Ans:- DIN 1.2311 steel is available in various supply forms such as round bars, square bars, plates/sheets, and flat bars/blocks. Common surface finishes include black-forged, black-rolled, turned, grinding, polished, peeled, and cold drawn, with pre-hardened states being typical.
